Our History
Oxford Lumber Company, Incorporated, a locally owned retail outlet for hardware, lumber and building materials was founded in 1958 by Charles W. Newman. Mr. Newman moved to Piedmont, Alabama from Kentucky and then to Oxford in 1958. He took his savings and began a lumber and building materials business at 4th and Barry Street in Oxford. Mrs. Mildred Newman, who was a Registered Nurse, joined the business soon after. Mrs. Newman is still active daily in the business as the Secretary/Treasurer of the company.
Mr. Newman had a basic philosophy of putting the customer first and doing whatever it took to meet the customer’s needs. He put everything back into the business and increased inventory and facilities as he could. In 1966, he joined Ace Hardware. This further expanded his business. Over the years, the business has kept growing and expanding its facilities, employees, services, and product offerings.

In 1988, Oxford Lumber moved into its present facility at 1400 Barry Street – the corner of Highway 78 West and Barry Street. Oxford Lumber and Ace Hardware serves do-it-yourselfers, remodelers, builders, commercial builders and industrial accounts. Featuring a knowledgeable sales force and support staff, the customer will find most anything he needs in hardware, paint, plumbing, electrical, power tools, millwork, building materials, and lumber.
Bill Newman, President of Oxford Lumber since his father’s death in 1999, says “I am most proud of our people here. This is a relationship business and we have great people working here. Customers know when they come in or call, they will get the attention of the employees and they will stay with them until they are served. It is very common for our employees to be out in the parking lot carrying items to customer’s cars and helping them secure their purchases for the trip home or to the job. Our people and our service is what makes our business.”
Oxford Lumber Company, Inc. is also proud to own and operate Roanoke Ace Home Center, Talladega Ace Home Center and Jacksonville Home Center.

Store hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 am – 5:00 pm and on Saturday, 7:00 am – 5:00 pm.
